SYKESVILLE: A second-alarm residential structure fire early Monday morning claimed the life of a 71-year-old man at a home along South Park Street in Sykesville Borough, according to county officials and emergency response records.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 7:24 AM to a reported structure fire at 147 South Park Street, initially with one fire company assigned. Upon arrival just minutes later, the incident was upgraded to a working fire with confirmed entrapment after heavy smoke was observed coming from all sides of the residence.

Sykesville Fire Department Chief Kevin Yamrick arrived on scene at approximately 7:26 AM and immediately requested a second alarm, bringing in additional fire companies and resources from across Jefferson County and neighboring areas.

Firefighters located the home’s sole occupant inside the structure at approximately 7:32 AM and expedited the response of emergency medical services. Despite rapid rescue efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was requested shortly thereafter, and Coroner Greg Furlong later confirmed the fatality. Fire crews worked under difficult conditions, including extreme winter cold, as they battled the blaze and conducted overhaul operations. The fire was officially reported under control at approximately 8:04 AM, though crews remained on scene for several hours to secure the structure and manage hot spots. The residence sustained extensive damage and is considered a total loss.

No additional injuries were reported among firefighters or emergency personnel.

The fire is being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal’s Unit. Officials stated there is currently nothing to suggest suspicious circumstances. The official cause of death remains pending further investigation.

A large multi-agency response assisted with fire suppression, scene coverage, and station transfers. Responding and supporting agencies included the Sykesville Fire Department, Reynoldsville Fire Department, Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company, Brady Township Fire, Rescue and Ambulance Inc., West Sandy Hose Company No. 1, Fourth Ward Hose Company No. 4, and Goodwill Hose Company No. 5. Station coverage transfers were handled by Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, Brookville Fire Company, and Mahaffey Fire Department.

Emergency medical services staged at the fire scene included Sykesville Ambulance and Medic 43 from Amserv LTD Dusan Community Ambulance.

South Park Street was temporarily closed to traffic during emergency operations but reopened later in the morning once the scene was stabilized.

The incident marks a tragic loss for the borough of Sykesville, located in eastern Jefferson County near the Clearfield County line. Authorities indicated additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
