JORDAN TOWNSHIP: A devastating barn fire in Jordan Township has left a Clearfield County dairy farmer facing staggering loss — and a community stepping forward in response.
The blaze tore through the Rowles family dairy operation earlier this week, destroying the main barn and critical equipment while claiming the majority of the herd. Matt Rowles, known locally for his steady work ethic and willingness to help fellow farmers, reportedly rushed into the burning structure in an effort to save his cows. In the chaos that often overwhelms livestock during emergencies, many of the animals would not leave the barn they had known as shelter and safety.
Only 11 cows were ultimately rescued, one suffering severe burns. Neighboring farms quickly mobilized to temporarily house the survivors, demonstrating the tight-knit support system that defines much of Clearfield County’s agricultural community.
Farm Bureau, Local Farms Share Support
The Clearfield County Farm Bureau publicly shared news of the tragedy, calling it “sad news for one of our own” and offering prayers and encouragement to the Rowles family.
Fellow agricultural businesses have also amplified the call for help. The Creamery at Knob Farm, a well-known dairy producer in Grampian, shared details of the loss and encouraged community members to contribute to rebuilding efforts. The widespread sharing has helped the fundraiser gain momentum well beyond its original goal.
GoFundMe Grows As Community Responds
A GoFundMe campaign titled “Rising from the Ashes: Help Matt Rebuild,” organized by Kayla Mueller, was initially launched with a modest target. As word spread and donations poured in, the goal was adjusted upward to reflect the scale of the devastation.
As of this week, the campaign has surpassed $16,000 toward a $22,000 goal — roughly three-quarters of the way there — reflecting both the immediate need and the generosity of neighbors, fellow farmers, and supporters.
Organizers say the funds will help offset emergency expenses, livestock losses, equipment replacement, and the long road toward rebuilding infrastructure critical to sustaining a dairy operation.
More Than A Barn
For dairy farmers, barns are not just buildings — they are the operational heart of a livelihood that demands daily commitment. Rowles was known for focusing less on modern upgrades and more on maintaining a solid herd and dependable production through hard work and consistency.
In a matter of hours, years of labor were reduced to ash.
Yet, in the aftermath, the response has highlighted something equally powerful: community resilience. Farmers stepped in immediately to transport animals, provide temporary shelter, and offer manpower. First responders worked through difficult conditions to contain the fire and protect surrounding property.
Those close to Rowles describe him as the type of person who shows up whenever someone needs assistance — whether helping with calves, repairing machinery, or lending advice. Now, friends say, it’s the community’s turn to stand shoulder to shoulder with him.
Looking Ahead
The coming weeks will bring difficult decisions about rebuilding and the future of the operation. While insurance and investigations will take time, supporters hope the fundraiser can ease immediate financial pressure and provide a foundation for recovery.
Those wishing to contribute can find the campaign by searching the GoFundMe title “Rising from the Ashes: Help Matt Rebuild.” Organizers also encourage sharing the link to broaden support.
In rural communities, tragedy often reveals the strength of the bonds between neighbors. In Jordan Township, that strength is already on full display.
